I’m not gonna lie, this post has been sitting in my drafts for about 6 months now. As it turns out, pregnancy has been a little rough on me and I feel like I’ve been sick for the entire 6 months! I am starting to feel better (finally!) and have been wanting to get back to posting more regularly. With Spring break coming up and a SEVERE need for some warmer weather, I guess I’ve been thinking about our amazing time at Breathless Resort in Cancun.
Back in September, we took a week long, ultra relaxing vacation in Mexico to the Breathless Resort in Cancun! It was one of those trips we had been talking about for a while and decided to just pull the plug and do it! We deserve it right? Mexico has always been a favorite of ours for years because it is so close and easy to get to. Hooray for direct flights! I wanted to tell you a little about our trip and the resort we stayed at because it was incredible and you should go!
Decisions, Decisions…
I have to say that when we decided to book our wedding at a Secrets Resort 4 years ago, we didn’t think we would be ruined forever. Not ruined in a bad way, but we loved it so much, we don’t even consider going to any other resort. Secrets is part of AM Resorts so when looking for our next beach vacation, we naturally looked at one of their many resort options. It was a difficult decision only because we wanted to go to all of them! We finally decided on Breathless Riviera Cancun, and adults only, all-inclusive hotel about 20 minutes from the Cancun airport. After a week of getting some much needed vitamin D and sea, I am happy to report that we are still ruined.
We usually use Apple Vacations for booking. They make it very easy and affordable to bundle the flight, hotel and airport transfers. Our shuttle took us directly from the airport to the resort and we arrived at about 11 am. It was a very early morning since our flight left at 6 am so needless to say, the cool towel and welcoming faces we met upon arrival were refreshing. A 3:00 AM alarm was a small price to pay to be on the beach by noon, so we sucked it up.
Our first stop was at The Bite Restaurant for some lunch. The restaurant overlooks the Energy pool, the middle pool in the resort. We were excited to walk around and explore the resort more but food was definitely a priority.
The Resort
Breathless Resort Riviera Cancun is known for having the best of both worlds, a great party scene but also some relaxation. It’s separated into three areas, the “party zone”, “the energy zone” and the Xhale Club. We stayed in the middle section (energy zone) which was a social area with great music but not quite the party scene like the Xcelarate area. One of the reasons we choose this resort was the option to have a relaxing day by the pool or a more high energy day the party area.
Xhale Club
The third area is the Xhale Club at Breathless Resort Cancun, which is an upgrade option and allows you access to the quiet, relaxing pool, exclusive lounge and a Mediterranean restaurant. Every hotel that is part of the AM Resorts has a similar upgrade option. I’ve been asked by friends if this is something they should consider when they book.
To be honest, we didn’t really see the benefit of it for what we were looking for on this vacation. The upgrade was $100 extra per night minimum and went up from there. We heard the extra restaurant was delicious, however the other 6 restaurants to choose from was plenty when we already have a hard enough time choosing where to eat.
We also wanted a little more energy than the quiet pool in the Xhale area. It would definitely be a great option if you wanted a very relaxing place to read or sunbathe. The Xhale Club lounge offers top shelf alcohol and snacks throughout the day. We don’t really drink much so that wasn’t a priority for us. Overall, it is a great option and we may consider it in the future. To find out more information about if the Xhale Club is for you, you can click HERE.
The Rooms
The room we booked was the Allure Junior Suite overlooking the Energy pool. We were celebrating our anniversary and our door was decorated with a Happy Anniversary banner upon arrival.
The room was incredible! The king size bed, small seating area with a coffee table, balcony with chairs and tables and spacious bathroom was large and inviting. The balcony overlooked the pool and was the perfect spot to be in the action without being in the action, if you know what I mean.
The main attraction of the room was a large shower located smack dab in the middle! Even with its 2 rain showers along with the regular shower head, we practically had to run around in there to get wet. Don’t worry though, there is a curtain you can pull over the glass if you want a little more privacy while you shower.
The resort really caters to privacy and each room has a secret box for room service, which you can order 24 hours a day! Can you say breakfast in bed?! Every room has a tablet where you can order the room service and also see the daily activities schedule, restaurant dress codes and menus, and general resort information.
The Beach
I asked the question on Instagram if you prefer to lounge at the beach or at at the pool while on vacation. Well, let me tell the 67% of you that love the beach, this beach did not disappoint! The beach here is amazing! It is hands down, the best beach at a resort I have ever been to. The soft, white sand goes on for the entire length of the resort. And there was never a shortage beach chairs, umbrellas and cold tropical drinks.
You might have heard or even seen that Cancun has had a problem with seaweed lately. We were actually a little concerned ourselves, but Breathless did a fantastic job of clearing the seaweed. They worked so hard to keep the beach clean and it definitely showed.
The Pools
As much as we love the beach, we also love to hang out at the pool. Who doesn’t, right? We had our choice of pools to choose from and mostly stayed around the middle area. All three pools are stunning! Each has their own vibe and something for everyone. Want a little R & R on your vacay? The Xhale Club is for you. Want to party the day away with a DJ pumping some great dance music while being showered with champagne? Head over to the Xcelerate Party Zone. Want a happy medium with fun activities and some great pool lounging? The Energy pool is just what you need.
The Food
Where do I even start!? The food was incredible! There is no way anyone could go hungry here. Great food is always a highlight of any vacation, am I right? Whether we were feeling like a quick snack by the pool or a 5 course dinner, it was all top notch. We were wined and dined every night at one of the 10 restaurants.
What we love about Breathless is the restaurants don’t require reservations and although it is an all inclusive resort, you order off a menu like any other restaurant. Of course we tried every restaurant (minus the Mediterranean restaurant as part of the Xhale club)
Bites
Located poolside, Bites was our favorite place for lunch. They had a great menu of fresh ceviche that was delicious. Over the week, I definitely tried them all!
Coquette
Hands down, Coquette was our favorite restaurant. French food is one of our favorites and they did it perfectly! It was honestly the best escargot I have ever had in my life! We loved it so much here, we went twice.
Picante
Mexican food in Mexico? Yes please!. I would say its more Tex-Mex, but still delicious. They came around to our table with a little cart and made us fresh pico de gallo as an appetizer. They even brought us a special dessert for our anniversary!
Silk City
This restaurant is the only one that you would need to get reservations for and that is only if you want to do the Hibachi. We just wanted sushi so we got a regular table where no reservations were required.
Spumante
Who goes on vacation and doesn’t eat a little pasta? Not me, that’s for sure. A few carbs never hurt anyone anyway. Spumante had all our favorite Italian specialties from bruschetta, risotto, gnocchi and of course, tiramisu.
The Nook Cafe
The first stop after our morning gym sesh. was of course the coffee shop. Their cappuccinos and pastries were so good every morning! In the afternoon, they would swap out the danishes and muffins for sandwiches and gelato. A great place to stop on you way from one pool to the next!
The Strip Grill
This is actually the same restaurant as Bites but its menu changes for dinner into a steakhouse. Here we enjoyed delicious crab cakes, steaks, fish and salads. The location overlooking the pool and the breeze off the ocean made it one of our favorite places for dinner.
Foam Beach Bar
A great place to catch all the action during the day. It located right next to the middle pool where you can pull yourself right up to the bar on one of the swings, watch a beach volleyball game and have yourself a wood fired pizza and a marg. If that’s not paradise, I don’t know what is!
The Activities
One of the things that we loved about this resort was the availability of activities but also the option to be as involved as you want. The other Secrets Resorts we have been to give off more of a relaxing vibe which was also fun, but we loved Breathless Resort because there was always something going on. Between volleyball, blackjack by the pool, Spanish sessions, sushi class or just people watching, there is never a dull moment.
The night life was so fun! Every night there was something going on. It could be a show at the theater, live music at the Wink bar or even a neon beach party! And if that wasn’t enough, there was always the club to dance the night away.
The Spa
The spa is a no brainer when it comes to vacation. We always make sure to schedule a massage while at a resort. It actually worked out really well on this trip because it was raining during the afternoon we went to the spa.
With every massage, you get to do the hydrotherapy spa. When we arrived, we were given a locker to put our clothes and belonging and changed into our bathing suits for the hydrotherapy pools.
They guide you thorough a rotation of saunas, steam rooms, and pools with massaging jets. The hydrotherapy room is open to a beautiful green jungle where you can lounge on one of their chairs while sipping on some infused water. Or spend some time after your massage in the relaxing zen room with calming, bubbling water. I could have easily spent all day in there!
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend Breathless Resort Riviera Cancun. Of all the AM resorts we have been to, this one is definitely in the running as one of our favorites. Like any beach vacation, it was a sad day when it was time to pack our bags to head home. We would live to return with a group of friends and family someday since the resort really caters to socialization and fun.
Like I said in the beginning of this post, we are expecting our first baby in June! We are over the moon excited but will be needing to find family friendly vacation resorts from here on out. If you have a favorite resort for families, I would love to hear your recommendations!
Let me know if you have any other questions in the comments below and I’ll get back to you!

Great review of my favorite place in Cancun! I couldn’t have said it better! I go mostly every year during the Superbowl, when they put the game on a 30 foot screen on the beach by the middle pool. It is always a great experience for the big game ! Love the 24/7 iPad room service and the huge glass showers in the rooms. Can’t wait to go back this year!!!
Going for the Superbowl sounds like it would be a blast! I agree! It’s one of our favorite places in Cancun! I hope you make it back soon!
